Tennis legend John McEnroe hasn’t made the trip to Melbourne for this year’s Australian Open.
But regular TV fixture Jim Courier is currently in hotel quarantine along with British commentator Sam Smith.
They will work again on Channel 9’s coverage along with the likes of Jelena Dokic, Todd Woodbridge, Lleyton Hewitt, Sam Groth, Alicia Molik, Casey Dellacqua and Dylan Alcott.
McEnroe has come out for the past two years with ESPN as well, but in COVID times the conditions were too difficult for the colourful commentator to come out from the US.
He and Courier have shared on-court interviewing duties on the men’s side.
Last year McEnroe and fellow great Martina Navratilova were reprimanded by Australian Open organisers after staging a protest on court over the naming of the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne Park.
A day after 24-time grand slam champion Court was honoured at the tournament on the 50th anniversary of her calendar Grand Slam, McEnroe and Navratilova unfurled a banner calling for the Margaret Court Arena to be renamed in honour of fellow Australian Evonne Goolagong.
A total of 15 chartered flights have brought over 1200 players, staff and officials into Australia for the grand slam starting on February 8.
