How 3AW’s kings of breakfast fared in latest radio ratings

The latest radio ratings have shown where 3AW’s Ross and Russel really stand, along with mixed results for other stars including Christian O’Connell, Eddie McGuire, Gerard Whateley and Mick Molloy.

Melbourne duo Ross Stevenson and Russel Howcroft have cemented their place as the kings of breakfast radio in the latest ratings.

The pair, who started together in August, posted a record 28.4 audience share, rising by 2.3 per cent from the last survey in September as the lockdown effect remains evident.

It was the best overall survey for 3AW since 1960.

On the FM dial, GOLD FM’s Christian O’Connell was still on top with 7.3, ahead of Nova’s Chrissie, Sam and Browny on 5.9, who rose 1.3.

Eddie McGuire and Luke Darcy’s Triple M Hot Breakfast dropped to 5.8 from an impressive 6.7 last survey, while FOX FM and Smoothfm both recorded 5.0.

It was a small rise for FOX’s Fifi, Fev and Byron who came in at 4.8 last time.

ABC breakfast fell from 14.9 to 13.7, while in drive, 3AW’s Tom Elliott rose 4.2 to dominate with 17.8.

It was great news for Triple M’s Mick Molloy and Jane Kennedy who were the No.1 FM drive show, pipping GOLD FM.

Across the board SEN made slight gains, the most being in the afternoon.

In breakfast the figures rose from 2.6 to 3.2, while Gerard Whateley in the morning only gained 0.1, from 2.8 to 2.9.

Howcroft, who is also a regular panellist on the ABC’s panel show Gruen, replaced John Burns who signed off on July 31 after almost 20 years.

“It’s not new for the show to be No.1 but it was an exciting day to get such a good number,” Howcroft said last month.

September’s ratings were the first ratings data in Melbourne that had been obtained solely from e-diaries, with paper diaries playing no role due to COVID-19 restrictions and the associated lockdowns.

Effectively it was a reset of the survey, given surveys 3, 4 and 5 were paused.

Due to the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, the latest ratings were released Thursday morning.
