Collingwood premiership star Heath Shaw has recalled a series of unfortunate events surrounding the drawn 2010 grand final.
Shaw revealed he was involved in a car accident on the way to the MCG and in between matches he broke up with his girlfriend.
“On the way to the ground I picked up a few boys along the way, got myself stuck in one lane where we wanted to get around a turning car, I didn’t look and a car comes humming up and they swerved and hit another car … but the good citizen I am I kept on driving because I had a game to get to,’’ Shaw said.
“I had Steele Sidebottom, Dayne Beams, Alan Didak in the car.
“It wasn’t ideal but it was definitely a talking point when walking into the ground.
“Driving through Richmond on grand final day I probably should have left a bit more time to get to the game. No one got hurt which was the main thing.”
Shaw also recalled breaking up with his girlfriend on the Wednesday before the grand final replay.
“We had been together a few months but it was young love, you know what it’s like,’’ he said.
“I don’t think at the time I realised how big a deal it was. I had other things on my mind at that point.”
Shaw also recalls other tales for Thirsty Camel’s content series “Thirsty for a Good Story” with host Mark Howard.
Now a contestant on SAS Australia, Shaw says the military-style show was the hardest thing he’s ever done.
“I didn’t sleep after that tunnel for two nights in there because I thought they’d make us do it again,’’ he said.
“Watching it back I was like ‘gee whiz how did I do that’.
“I wouldn’t do it again but I definitely would recommend it. If you’re willing to have a red hot crack at it, then good.”
