Foo Fighters are in talks to play a one-off show in Geelong in March as part of an initiative to promote Victoria as a world-class live music destination.

Sources say the US rockers are scheduled to perform at GMHBA Stadium in early March for Always Live, a new Visit Victoria program which aims to fund and celebrate contemporary live music.

It is believed GMHBA Stadium has pencilled in the first weekend of March to stage Foo Fighters.

Victorian Major Events Minister Martin Pakula, and the Foo Fighters’ Australian tour promoter, Frontier, had no comment on the potential coup.

However, sources said Foo Fighters are “100 per cent” booked to perform in Geelong as part of a “big Visit Victoria play,” and will return to play stadium shows in November and December.

Another insider said a Foos show at GMHBA Stadium is “proposed” but added: “There is still a lot to be worked through.”

On its website, Always Live is described as “a brand-new Victoria-wide celebration of contemporary live music; the biggest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and set to make global noise.

It adds: “Cementing our position as the live music capital of Australia, Always Live is turning up the volume on our unparalleled homegrown talent, the best acts from around the country and the most sought-after artists from across the globe.

“Always Live is taking place Victoria-wide. Our focus is equally on metro, suburban, outer suburban and regional areas across the state.”

Live shows and performances associated with the Always Live initiative will take place across several weeks in November.

Foo Fighters’ hits include Everlong, Best Of You, Learn To Fly, Monkey Wrench and My Hero.

Their scheduled Geelong date precedes a South American run, kicking off in Mexico City on March 15.

Foo Fighters, fronted by Dave Grohl, are regular visitors to Australia, and have sold out arenas and stadiums on previous tours.

“The thing I miss the most about Australia are the people,” Grohl told Triple M late last year. “Honestly, I go around the world, and meet so many people, and I love meeting people, but there’s something about Australians. I haven’t met one I don’t like. I’m serious.

He added: “I love the different cities, I love playing shows down there, I love the food, and I do love the beer. There’s a lot to love about Australia.

“If there’s one place I miss touring more than anywhere, I’m not kidding, it’s Australia. We’ve never walked away from Australia thinking, ‘Well, that was OK.’ We always leave there, like, ‘Oh God, we can’t wait to come back!’”
