Former Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe has played tour guide for Italian male supermodel Fabio Mancini during his two-month stint in Sydney, revealing he looked up to the Australian when he was younger.

With former Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe as a tour guide, top male supermodel Fabio Mancini is making the most of his time in Sydney.

In town for the first time, the Italian model attended the Bulgari Art Award cocktail gala at the Art Gallery of NSW on Tuesday night.

“I met Ian at an event a while ago and he has been showing me around,” he said. “I used to want to be a swimmer so I looked up to him, he is an icon.”

Mancini, who is signed to IMG internationally, is two weeks into a two-month stint working in Sydney.

Usually based in Milan, he is one of the most in demand male models globally and has fronted more than eight campaigns and 50 fashion shows for Armani, and is a friend of the brand for Bulgari.

For several years, top model website models.com has listed the 31-year-old as one of the 50 sexiest male models in the world.

“For me the most sexy thing in the world is the way you are. It is not only your body. It is more about what is inside. It can be difficult because people are usually interested in who you are outside, not inside.”

Mancini’s clients have also included Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood and Pierre Cardin.

He has modelled a lot of underwear over the years and said exercise is key to being runway ready.

“I eat everything,” he said. “People often ask me the secret to be shaped like me and there is no secret. If you go out and your friends are eating a pizza and a day later you have to shoot a campaign, well you don’t eat the pizza. I am a professional.”
