Eric Bana says night Grand Final makes AFL look ‘weak’
Hollywood star and die-hard Saints fan Eric Bana has slammed this year’s night AFL Grand Final, saying it makes our great game “look weak”, as he unleashed his thoughts on Twitter.

Hollywood star and die-hard Saints supporter Eric Bana has given a big thumbs down to a night AFL Grand Final and the Gabba.
The Melbourne actor tweeted: “So, the elephant in the room, night Grand Final. It’s a big no from me. Always hated the idea.
“For those whose night time rating for 1 game a year is all that matters, I think it makes our game look weak. Day time traditions and spectacle far outweigh.”
The AFL Grand Final will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane, at 7.30pm, on October 24.
Bana added: “As for the Gabba, it looks far superior on a sunny QLD day. At night, it looks flat and 2 dimensional, add to that highly predictable tropical rain, all diminish the quality of our showcase. Don’t assume it won’t happen in 2021, be heard.”
Bana, star of Chopper, Black Hawk Down and Hulk, said his AFL obsession held up filming on Steven Spielberg’s movie, Munich.
“(St Kilda) were in a prelim back at the time,” Bana told Nick Riewoldt on Fox Footy.
“I came out of my trailer about five minutes late, which I don’t normally do, and (Spielberg) could see I was very stressed.
“He asked what was going on, and I explained there was a very important football game going on back at home.”
Bana’s dad, Ivan, was relaying commentary down the phone line to his son. Spielberg listened in briefly, then shrugged: “I don’t really understand what’s going on.”
Bana told Spielberg the game had five minutes left to go.
The director asked a cinematographer to spend another five minutes setting up, so Bana could finish watching the game.
