CELEBRITY hot spot Eve âis to âclose it’s doorsâ after 10 yearsâ. Even New York’s Studio 54, frequented by the likes of Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger, didn’t last that long.
Eve owners Nick and Daniel Russian and shareholder Chris Judd have sold the lease on the Southbank site back to their landlords, who plan to demolish the City Rd building to make way for a new apartment block.
The last night to remember at Eve will be next Saturday. The Russians plan on going out with a bang.
Nick Russian said after a decade of running the club the time is right to say goodbye.
“We did the deal with our landlord a little while ago and it’s always been the case that there was going to be an end date at some stage,” he said.
“We thought about it, should we keep going a bit longer?
“But now that the building is about to be knocked over, it is what it is.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity that they offered to us, and we are just looking forward to spending more time with our wives and kids.”
Eve has been a celebrity haunt since it opened, a place where AFL players partied and partied and partied.
The club made headlines around the country in 2006 when Ben Cousins was arrested after being found slumped and shirtless on the street outside after a big ol’ bender. The urban legend was he muttered to police, “Take me back to Eve.”
Some of the more high-profile names to frequent the venue include Britney Spears, Kanye West, Jennifer Hawkins, Shane Warne, Vince Colosimo, Matt Newton and Guy Sebastian.
Serena Williams let her hair down at the venue after all her Australian Open wins and there’s a chance she will be there tonight.
Russian said the night Britney Spears came to the club was bizarre. She sat in a corner by herself wearing sunglasses.
“We were told that no one was to drink alcohol while she was there’’, says Russian. “She was a bit of a recluse, but lovely when I spoke to her. But it was odd.”
Some of the biggest nights were the 10 private after-parties the Russians hosted for the Grand Final winning footy players. The brothers remember Sydney’s win in 2012 as the best.
“The atmosphere was electric,’’ said Nick Russian. It will be again before they turn the lights out.
