Eddie McGuire says he’s good to go for another 10 years on radio as Triple M Hot Breakfast celebrates a decade on-air.

“It’s a privilege and a pleasure to be able to get up in the morning and talk to the audience in Melbourne,” McGuire told Confidential today.

“It’s a major part of my life, and continues to be. I’ve got no intentions of passing things on. I’m enjoying for all the right reasons.”

McGuire started the Hot Breakfast show on September 8, 2009, with AFL great Luke Darcy, comedian Tony Moclair, and presenter Mieke Buchan.

Funnyman Mick Molloy joined the top-rating team in 2011, and was replaced by Wil Anderson in 2017.

McGuire has worked at Triple M for 30 years.

McGuire said the radio show’s aim was, and still is, to cover “everything Melbourne” and set the news agenda.

“When you want to hear what’s going on with the AFL Rising Star Award, I can ask the bloke next to me (Darcy), because he picked it.

“I’m obviously a lot of things in Melbourne, and with Wil, we’ve got a stand-up headliner. We all work in varied parts of what happens in this town, so we have an insider’s view of what’s going on in Melbourne, rather than something someone heard from somebody else.

“We’ve introduced talk to FM radio,” McGuire added. “When we started Triple M Football, the prevailing noise at the time was sports commentary on FM wouldn’t work. It didn’t work because no-one had done it properly before.”

Asked how he’s had to adapt his already-hectic life to do morning radio, McGuire said: “Clearly when you’re getting up at 4.30am, you make changes. You’re getting older as well.

The old days of coming into work straight in from The Metro are over.”

This week, the team used listener feedback to compile favourite moments from the past 10 years.

Highlights have included Live from Eddie’s Desk performances, Wally the sperm bank contributor, and Darcy giving Russell Crowe a hasty Oscars-style wrap-up.
