Eddie McGuire’s Hot Breakfast loses top spot in breakfast radio ratings

PERHAPS it’s a hangover from the footy, but Eddie McGuire’s Hot Breakfast team on Triple M have dropped from No. 1 in the last ratings survey of the year.

PERHAPS it’s a hangover from the footy, but Eddie McGuire’s Hot Breakfast team on Triple M have dropped from No. 1 in the last ratings survey of the year.

The Hot Breakfast team dropped from a 9.4 share to 8.5, to be overtaken by Fifi Box, Dave Thornton and Brendan Fevola on FOX FM.

Southern Cross Stereo executives would be smiling at the performance of the FOX FM team, which have very successfully added Brendan Fevola to the roster this year.

Fevola has proven to be a natural radio performer, fitting in perfectly after winning I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here earlier in the year.

3AW finished the year yet again the No. 1 station in Melbourne, led by a strong performance from their breakfast team of Ross Stevenson and John Burns. The long-running team ended the year with a 18.9 share, up from 17.8. Like the breakfast team, Neil Mitchell also had a win at the end of the year, rising from a 14.4 share to 15.3. However Tom Elliott in drive had a fall, going from 12.1 to 10.0.

BEHIND the FOX FM and Triple M teams, breakfast FM radio in Melbourne is very close. Nova 100’s team of Chrissie Brown, Sam Pang and Jonathan Brown are on a 6.4 share, Gold FM’s Jo Stanley and Lehmo are on a 6.3 share, as is Mike Perso and Jennifer Hansen on Smooth FM, with Matt Tilley and Meshel Laurie on KIIS, just behind on a 6.1 share.

HAMISH Blake and Andy Lee proved once again, when it comes to Melbourne, they dominate. The boys, who announced next year will be their last year on FOX FM, finished the year on top with a 14.8 share. They are way ahead of their nearest rival Smooth FM. Interestingly Smooth FM just plays music and it is the No. 2 drive team in FM, with Gold FM at No.3. Smooth FM and Gold FM are ahead of the more fancied — and much more expensive — drive teams on Nova 100, KIIS, and Triple M.

ONE of the big stories in Melbourne radio the past couple of years is the success of the Smooth FM format. With little overheads and roster of easy listening music, it has struck a chord. Only FOX FM had better ratings overall on the FM side of things.

ALL eyes will be on Garry Lyon, Hamish McLachlan and Tim Watson as they start on SEN breakfast next year. The last survey for Francis Leach and David Schwartz on SEN before the changes, the team averaged a 3.8 share. They were only ahead of Magic 1278, Radio National, News Radio and ABC Classic FM.
