Eddie McGuire ‘sounded out’ to warble on The Masked Singer

He has one of the most recognisable voices in media but Eddie McGuire was approached by The Masked Singer producers to try a different type of vocal. Here’s what happened.

The Latest: Lindsay Lohan UNMASKS Cody Simpson!

Eddie McGuire says he was approached by producers of The Masked Singer to warble in disguise on the hit show.

“I was flattered, then I laughed because Channel 10 (which produces and broadcasts The Masked Singer) is my old station of origin. It took me by surprise, but I think the show is great, and it’s all about good humour and having fun.

“But it’s a bit like my football career,” McGuire, a broadcaster and Collingwood Football Club president, told Confidential. “All I lacked was ability.”

McGuire dropped The Masked Singer bombshell when former politician Christopher Pyne appeared on Triple M Hot Breakfast on Thursday, revealing he’d also been approached by the Ten show.

“I was very close to saying yes,” Pyne said.

Asked about his singing voice, McGuire told Confidential: “It’s s---house. I was in the choir at school, then my voice disintegrated when I was Year 7, and I went to 1977 Grand Final and the replay within a week.

“My voice didn’t break, it just disintegrated barracking for Collingwood at two Grand Finals.

McGuire added: “My dad could sing … and my son can sing, so it’s skipped a generation.

“If I could sing, I would have performed on The Footy Show, Millionaire Hot Seat, and opened the Hot Breakfast with a song every morning.”

McGuire’s Nine and Foxtel contracts, and his poor vocal ability, meant The Masked Singer talks didn’t get to the pick-a-costume stage.

But McGuire said he would have happily worn the Magpies mascot costume on the show.

Pyne also confirmed long-held whispers he sang a selection of show tunes, and a Barbra Streisand hit, accompanied by Triple M newsman Seb Costello.

The singalong happened at the Costello family home — Seb’s father is the former Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello.

Pyne said: “My view is, what happens at the Costello’s late on a Saturday afternoon should stay in the vault of time.”

Channel 10 had no comment on McGuire and Pyne’s revelations.
