In what would be politely referred to as an awkward situation for Melbourne Cup host broadcaster Channel 10, Bachelorette star Angie Kent has said ‘nup to the cup’.
The passionate animal lover shared the hashtag on a social media post hinting at “something exciting coming up this week”.
Ten this year took over broadcasting the Melbourne Cup carnival in what has been reported to be a $100 million deal over five years.
The Bachelorette is a flagship show on the network. Kent’s post however was met by praise with hundreds of messages, including from fellow network star Bonnie Anderson.
“Always have and always will stay true to my beliefs,” she responded when commended for her stance. “Ain’t no fancy events swaying this girl. No horse’s life is worth free champagne and dressing up.”
Nup to the cup is a hashtag shared on social media by those opposed to the treatment of race horses.
When contacted, a spokeswoman for Channel 10 said: “Angie is honest and passionate about what she believes in. She has always been candid and open — that is what we love about her.”
Kent’s post comes after model Ruby Tuesday Matthews refuses to attend the annual event and accused celebrities and influencers of turning a blind eye to animal cruelty to make a quick buck.
“I actually just find it a bit sickening that a lot of Instagrammers I know personally, and girlfriend and acquaintances, will complain about the animal cruelty but still go,” she told Confidential. “Influencers make money with the designers that they wear and the promotion of dresses, accessories and products via their channels before the day even starts. I’ve never taken part in any of this. I’ve been invited every year … and every year I’ve declined.”
