CARRIE Bickmore has achieved her goal of raising more than $1 million in a year for brain cancer research and raising awareness through her charity Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer.
Bickmore said she is delighted by the response to her idea of selling beanies.
“I presumed it would be something that would take a few years to do. So it wasn’t really something I thought would happen so soon, it’s all a bit of a whirlwind,” she said.
The host of The Project started the charity last year, in honour of her late husband Greg Lange, who died from brain cancer in 2010.
She has already given a grant of $250,000 to the neuroscience department of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
“I spent year after year in the neuroscience ward, and I hated going there,” she said.
Bickmore said attending with her husband made her “feel sick in the stomach” — but that’s changed.
“When I walked back through and I met the head scientist doing the research, he was so excited and he had so much hope,” she said.
“It felt like a completely different feeling being there, it felt like this is going to be something really positive.”
