The uncovering of gruesome treatment of horses in Australia’s racing industry has prompted women focused networking app Bumble to make a sizeable donation to Victorian racing’s Off the Track program.
Bumble joined the exclusive Birdcage at Flemington last year and is committed to supporting the Victoria Racing Club’s four day Melbourne Cup Carnival next month.
Bumble has decided to donate $130,000 to the Off the Track program in support of its work to transition retired racehorses and those who don’t make the track into second careers.
Bumble also received news at the weekend that its Melbourne Cup special guest, Lana Condor, had withdrawn from attending due to scheduling issues filming her Netflix series, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before 3.
The American actor informed Bumble of the clash after the reports emerged late last week.
Last month pop star Taylor Swift also pulled out of her commitment to perform on Cup Day.
Michelle Battersby, Bumble Marketing Director APAC, said the company backed respectful behaviour for all living things and the donation was the brand’s way of taking action against cruelty to horses.
“We were heartbroken by the recent reports around the mistreatment of retired racehorses and we wanted to take immediate action to show our support,’’ Battersby said.
“Bumble supports Racing Victoria and the Victoria Racing Club’s condemnation of the
inhumane treatment of horses and we stand by a coordinated approach to the care of horses
during racing events, as well as when their racing careers are over.”

On Friday Victoria Racing Club Chief Executive Officer, Neil Wilson, condemned the vision released on the ABC on Thursday night.
Yesterday he said: “The Victoria Racing Club acknowledges and strongly endorses Bumble’s commitment to supporting equine welfare and we thank them for this generous contribution to the Victorian racing industry’s Off the Track program.”
