Daryl Braithwaite stopped traffic in Bourke Street with a surprise performance of his hits alongside some familiar guests.
The legendary singer, wearing his beloved Magpies scarf, united footy opponents in the CBD to belt out The Horses.
He shared the microphone at times with AFL stars, Collingwood’s Taylor Adams, Melbourne’s Brodie Grundy, Essendon’s Dyson Heppell and Melbourne’s Jack Viney.
“I haven’t done something like this in a long time, it’s a little bit daunting,’’ Braithwaite said.
“It’s still very enjoyable. They’re all so tall but they sing like Elvis.”
Braithwaite treated city onlookers outside the Telstra store to two other hits with his guitarist, Days Go By and One Summer.
Braithwaite, who also brought the signed Collingwood jumper he was gifted in 2018, got his scarf signed by Adams.
He said he was chuffed to hear that the players get hyped before a game listening to Australian’s unofficial anthem.
“It makes me feel good, it’s amazing to know the song still resonates after all these years,’’ he said.
As well as The Horses being a clear favourite among footballers, a third of players said they have added Eminem and Drake to their playlists and songs by Cold Chisel, Paul Kelly and The Killers also featured prominently.
Telstra’s AFL Player Anthems are available on Spotify.
