Bardot celebrates 20th anniversary of Poison but two members aren’t joining celebrations

Bardot’s single Poison came out 20 years ago today but only three members of the band are in celebratory mood, with two refusing to mark the milestone.

Bardot’s 20th anniversary reunion has been derailed by two members not taking part in the celebrations.

The group, formed on TV show Popstars, released their debut single Poison on April 10 2000.

However, Sophie Monk and Sally Polihronas have been noticeably absent from any celebrations of the milestone on their social media accounts, as well as an official Bardot account set up to mark the occasion.

Bardot members Tiffani Wood, Katie Underwood and Belinda Chapple all performed versions of Poison on their individual Instagram accounts last week, with fans pleading with Monk and Polihronas to join in.

Even original Bardot member Chantelle Barry, who left before the band had recorded music, posted a version of Poison on Instagram this week.

Today Underwood, who is now a sound healer, diplomatically explained the silence of her two bandmates, while posting photos with Monk and Polihronas either cropped or photoshopped out.

“Twenty years ago today our lives changed forever,” Underwood wrote on Instagram.

“The release of our first single was the beginning of the most gruelling, exciting, confronting and amazing periods of my life. In any new job, you don’t always get along with everyone but you hope you’ll find some good sorts in there somewhere.

“In these two women – Belinda and Tiffani – I found my tribe – funny, intelligent, talented, caring and grounded people who I am delighted to still call friends after all these years. These last few weeks, and even months, have been a joyful reunion for me. Thank you.

“Sadly two of our other group members did not share the same nostalgia that we do – and that’s OK. Maybe someday that will change.

“For now I want to celebrate my Sisters of Bardot and say thanks for all the great times, sorry for all the bad ones and cheers to a bright happy and healthy future for all of us.”

Sources say before the coronavirus there had been negotiations for Bardot to reform to celebrate their 20th anniversary, with potentially lucrative offers of a tour and a documentary on the table.

However Monk reportedly ruled herself out immediately, later followed by Polihronas — stalling any chances of a reformation.

Monk has since moved out of music and into TV work, hosting Love Island, and a clipshow that she filmed for Channel 9 two years ago which was shelved, Accidental Heroes, has been put on air this week to fill the coronavirus void.

Underwood has posted reinterpretations of other Bardot songs on her Instagram lately, including These Days, and is running sound healing workshops on her social media.

Poison reached No. 1 in Australia and sold over 140,000 copies.

Their self-titled debut album also reached No. 1 in May 2000.

Underwood left the band in 2001, who continued on as a fourpiece for second album Play It Like That, which peaked at No. 16 on the ARIA chart.

Bardot split up in April 2002, with Sophie Monk promptly launching a solo career.

Wood, Underwood and Chapple would all go on to release solo material.

Wood now runs Popstar Kidz workshops on the Gold Coast.
