MORE than two years out from its release, Oscar winning producer Jon Landau has given a rare insight into behind-the-scenes production on James Cameron’s much anticipated Avatar sequel.
“We want to see that the world and characters deliver on what the promise of the first movie set-up,” Landau, who won an Academy Award for Titanic, said at the CinemaCon event in the US this week.
Avatar 2, which will again star Australian Sam Worthington in the lead as Jake Sully, is not slated for cinematic release until December 18, 2020.
The first Avatar film broke global box-office records when director James Cameron unveiled the project in 2009.
There are four more Avatar films to come with the next instalment to again star Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, with Kate Winslet joining the cast.
Cameron is currently in the middle of performance motion capture shooting “in a huge water tank” as the film is set in the Na’vi underwater world.
“Kate Winslet came to do a scene in a water tank and held her breath for more than three minutes — we trained our whole cast to do that,” Landau said.
“She made this look so easy, she nailed the Na’vi language.”
