The Birdcage is the place where the famous and those who want to be, go to play.
It’s also where some celebrities just go to hang out.
Flemington’s VIP enclosure has had a rich history of attracting big names, creating big and forgettable moments, and also showing off how the city turns races week into the most talked about party.
Each year there are those who are much sought after, and those who have quietly dropped off the list.
Penfolds, the Victoria Derby Day sponsor, have a very targeted guest list to align with the brand.
“Brands spend so much money on their luxury spaces and want to make sure they have guests who align and who would go and buy a Penfolds wine,’’ said Kate Keane, from Kate & Co, representing Penfolds.
“We have discovered many of our guests are big fans of the brand or have attended events in the past so that’s really important too, and the brand wanted to target a younger demographic.”
Some of those who’ve been invited include Tom and Emma Hawkins, Brit and Joel Selwood, Erin Holland, Ruby Brownless, Mia Fevola and Effie Kats.
Other brands such as Lexus and Crown are hosting the likes of Bec Judd, Lana Wilkinson, Rebecca Harding, Melissa Leong, Rozalia and Nick Russian, Amy Pejkovic, Josh Daicos and his partner Annalise Dalins, Olympia Bellchambers, Nathan Buckley, Olivia Rogers, Paul Versace and Kris Smith.
It also makes a difference if you have plenty of social media pull. Expect to see many young faces including the likes of Hannah Dal Sasso, Sam Guggenheimer, Izzy Armitage and Jasmine Tavares.
Sydney types will also be there in droves, think Karl Stefanovic, Pip Edwards, Jono Castano and Simone Holtznagel, as one publicist said, “they may not care to see a horse but they help spread awareness that it’s the place to be”.
Among the colourful and less desirable this year are the likes of Wayne Carey, Clayton Oliver, Daniel Andrews, Vince Colosimo and Marty Sheargold.
“That’s not to say they can’t ever be invited again but when you hit the headlines or are followed by incidents and drama, there is no value for a sponsor,’’ said one insider.
“Also when you have a high level position and then you don’t, you also lose a lot of your star power. Guest lists need to be current with people we want to see and hear about.”
