“Every single day of my life in 2018 was a challenge, filled with some serious obstacles to overcome,” Akech said.
“I would wake up every morning crying but put the biggest smile on my face and tried my hardest to push through the day pretending I was fine, then I’d come home and cry some more and go to sleep.
“I don’t know how I’m still here today but I’m so grateful.”
Akech, 19, was the breakout model of 2018, featuring in American Vogue, British Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris and Australian Vogue.
She also made history being the second black model to be selected by Karl Largerfeld as his Chanel bride.
The Sudanese teen said she decided to open up about her mental health hoping to help others who may also be suffering.
“I’ve suffered from really bad depression and anxiety for a while now and I still do but I’m learning to handle it better now but it's a daily struggle and not every day is a good day,” she said.
“The main reason I didn’t want to talk about my depression and anxiety was I didn’t want people to look at me differently.
“It took me a long time to learn and understand the importance of speaking to someone about your feelings.”
