Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Urvi Majumdar, Sass Attack and Comedy Good Time

Dark, smart and funny sums up Urvi Majumdar as she gives her commentary on the novel and mundane.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

Sass Attack: Our show is designed for anyone who wants a night out and away from all normal responsibilities, to indulge in a bit of hysterical laughing at some witty observations and jokes that are both well-meaning and sarcastic.

BRITISH AND IRISH COMEDIANS TO SEE THIS YEAR

TOP COMICS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE COMEDIANS

Both Carla (Wills) and I have a dry sense of humour and we’re pretty smart (self-proclaimed), so I think audiences can expect to be surprised with some original perspectives on both the novel and the mundane in this life.

Comedy Good Time: This is a fantastic show for anyone looking for a quality split show with very different acts, for a very reasonable price.

These boys have become good friends of mine throughout our time slogging it out at Melbourne’s open mics and I actually admire their work ethic a lot.

We’ve all been perfecting our material and thought why not make an awesome show with three of Melbourne’s best comics in one.

Tell us what you’ve been up to since you were here last.

I did my first split-show, Mispronounced, at MICF last year with my good friend Raewyn Pickering.

The experience of MICF in 2018 made me a much stronger performer.

I had so much fun that I decided to be ambitious and create two shows this year.

I’m very happy and lucky to have recently made it into RAW Victorian state finals for the second year in a row.

I am really grateful that I had the opportunity to practise a lot and very regularly throughout the year and now feel prepared to present my best and tightest jokes for a whole month this MICF.

Spruik it! Who should see your show, and why?

Generally, I find that people who like my comedy are super cool and heaps of fun so coming to see me is an indication that you have a great personality.

I genuinely think the people I am performing with are some of the most clever and hardworking comedians in Melbourne and I find it pretty easy to promote our shows when I think about how reliable they are.

I am shy and never say this but I genuinely think it’s going to be basically impossible to not have a great time at either of these shows.

What’s your No. 1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Do some research and ask people who may have some exposure to the comedy industry for tips on who to see.

Sometimes the best comedians may not be the most well-known or advertised.

Look at who is on regularly in the Melbourne open mic scene and also watch the acts on at festival club each night — usually these are all high quality acts with great shows in the festival too.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

I am excited to see Danielle Walker, Becky Lucas, Anne Edmonds, Raewyn Pickering and Ben Searle, Maria Bamford, Sonia Di Lorio, Eve Ellenbogen, Pete Jones, Comedy Zone, Jonathan Schuster, Rohan Ganju, Tim Hewitt, Matthew Vasquez and heaps more.

These people have been working really hard and are very talented.

I am also in love with Maria Bamford and cried when I found out she is coming to Melbourne.

What stands out to you about Melbourne and/or its people?

It’s impossible not to have a love affair with Melbourne during comedy festival. The city feels tipsy, golden, full of laughter.

The air has a lightheartedness to it and the streets are buzzing in the CBD.

I love Melbourne and have grown up here. I feel so proud of our city during the comedy festival as I feel it’s showing the best of itself

Eat in amazing places, drink fancy cocktails and sit back and laugh; every night is date night for three weeks.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

Female comedians have really inspired me.

I didn’t go looking for them specifically but I listen to these people when I feel like I’m struggling to find inspiration: Sarah Silverman, Maria Bamford, Anne Edmonds, Chelsea Peretti, Aparna Nancherla.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

We are so excited to see you there! follow me on Facebook, Instagram or twitter for updates.
