Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Stew Walker, The Book of Snorin’ — Sleep Apnea the Musical

This is no snooze fest — in fact, comedian Stew Walker is a breath of fresh, non-apnoea affected air, for snorers and lovers of snorers alike.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

A heap of silly original songs that tell the story of my experience with sleep apnoea.

Plus some good advice that could save your relationship or even your life!

Oh, and lucky door prizes, too, thanks to the lovely people at CPAP Victoria.

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

This is my second solo show at MICF.

The first was A Hard Day’s Night of Beatles Parodies in 2015.

Between then and now I produced and performed in the musical comedy variety shows 1 Night Stand: A Musical Comedy Showcase at the 2016 festival and All Star Musical Comedy Showcase with Greg Champion and Friends in the 2017 festival.

And I’ve also performed at comedy clubs around Australia and Asia.

Who should see your show, and why?

My show is for snorers and the people who love them.

They should see my show so they can discover the funny side of snoring and sleep apnoea, and learn that you can get through it and enjoy life again.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Get away from the town hall and go to a cool independent venue like The Butterfly Club, Tasma Terrace, or The Charles Dickens Tavern.

What could be more Melbourne than a comedy show down a laneway, in a basement, or a heritage building?

Or all three in the case of my show!

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

Lano and Woodley are the top of my list because I missed their show last year.

I love Frank Woodley’s silliness and physical comedy and think he’s a national treasure.

And I’m keen to see Jude Perl, who’s my favourite musical comedian in Melbourne.

What do you love about Melbourne?

I’m a lifelong Melburnian, and the thing I love about comedy festival time is the happy vibe across the whole city.

It’s the best time of year for sure.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

It’s a bit cliched but just everyday life.

Because there is humour in most things if you look for it.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

I perform the show in flannelette pyjamas, and I’ve had the fly sewn shut to ensure there are no unfortunate wardrobe malfunctions.
