Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Ryan Patterson

To be or not to be … laughing out loud at this improvised Shakespearean show, that is the mission for comedian Ryan Patterson and his team.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

Our show is not your Year 10 English experience.

It’s fast and funny while also producing audible gasps.

We use Shakespeare’s style and themes to create a brand new play on the (damn’d) spot.

Love and death, rhyme and puns … so many puns!

THE A-Z OF COMEDIAN Q&AS

YOUR GUIDE TO THE MELBOURNE COMEDY FESTIVAL

Tell us about you.

Soothplayers have been producing their brand of improvised comedy since 2015.

The cast includes veterans of Melbourne’s premier improvisation troupes, including The Improv Conspiracy, Impro Melbourne, The Big HOO-HAA!

Who should see your show, and why?

People love our show, regardless of their experience with Shakespeare.

The show is not elitist in the slightest and can be very silly.

Having said that, humans that love wordplay and language will adore the show.

People that prefer a complete story will appreciate the play.

We also provide a ‘laugh or your money back’ guarantee.

What’s your No. 1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Plan your night to see as many shows as possible.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

There’s a lot of shows at Trades Hall that look great this year.

I’m hoping to see Hit By A Blimp, The Aspie Hour and Impromptunes.

I’m also keen to see Margot Tanjutco in Vanity Fair Enough, Space Force, and Rik Brown in Rocky the Third.

What do you love about Melbourne?

I love Melbourne during the comedy festival.

The city buzzes and the audiences are always warm, unlike the weather.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

William Shakespeare, for obvious reasons. Monty Python in tone.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

The show is improvised so every show is different.

One audience member saw the show 10 times last year, can you beat that record?

SOOTHSAYERS, COMPLETELY IMPROVISED SHAKESPEARE, APRIL 8-21, TRADES HALL, MUSIC ROOM. BOOK TICKETS
