Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Michelle Brasier, Double Denim — A Very Fancy Dinner Party

Don your double denim, sit back and enjoy a chaotic feast of laughter at this show, says comedian Michelle Brasier.

Comedian Michelle Brasier on Melbourne

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

Tomato sauce, shame, music, chaos. A bloody good time.

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

We won the Directors’ Choice last year so we’re very keen to get back in the ring this year confidently.

Since then some really nice things have happened. I was on Get Krackin, which is my favourite TV show. That’s lovely.

And Laura has joined Fringe Wives Club. We are busy wee bees.

Who should see your show, and why?

People who like absurd comedy. In reviews we usually get compared to Broad City and The Mighty Boosh.

What’s your No. 1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Take a flyer from someone at Town Hall and see a comedian you’ve never heard of. Also — have Om across the road. It’s so cheap and delicious.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

I directed Demi Lardner’s show so would recommend that! Geraldine Hickey, Becky Lucas, Sam Campbell, Dane Simpson, Poopie Tum Tums, Nikki Britton, Charity Werk.

Go see Upfront, it’s the best night ever.

What stands out to you about Melbourne?

Melbourne is the best. My dog lives there. I live there.

Other dogs live there.

Very good dog city.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

The Ab Fab girls, French and Saunders.

DOUBLE DENIM, A VERY FANCY DINNER PARTY

Rating: ★★★★½

Reviewer: Mikey Cahill

Some nights, everything goes right for a stand-up comedy duo.

The best friends from Melbourne, Double Denim, had one of those shows last week.

Michelle Brasier is like a deranged Catherine Tate character who has bussed in from Gisborne, while her off-sider Laura Frew (also starring in Fringe Wives Club) holds the room with tales of Trent and his dad, Andrew G and James Mathison.

There’s a whizzing sense of fun and chaos — it’s one of the only shows this year without a dull spot.

Brasier in particular modulates her voice to great effect, pushing the laws of LOLs like Aunty Donna do.

Last year’s winners of the Director’s Choice Award are just getting started, catch them in a 60-seater while you still can babe.

Double Denim, A Very Fancy Dinner Party, The Victoria Hotel, until April 21.
