Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Mark Trenwith

Gross fun, snot jokes and wickedly silly humour are just part of the fun in this multi-generational comedy, says comedian Mark Trenwith, aka Mr Snot Bottom.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

Ignore the title.

Expect an amazing, incredible, really, really, great, great show.

Apart from all the bits that go horribly, terribly bad.

Which ends up being most of it.

THE A-Z OF COMEDIAN Q&AS

YOUR GUIDE TO THE MELBOURNE COMEDY FESTIVAL

It’s a show where everything that could go wrong does, in fact, the show never actually begins.

When the show starts I’m still in my undies.

And then it just goes down hill from there.

What you’ve been up to since last time you were here?

I’ve just recorded a new podcast with Kinderling Radio. It’s called Busy Bodies and each episode teaches kids a different function of the human body. Especially the gross parts.

It gets launched April 1st — conveniently on April Fool’s Day.

Though I’m worried people might just assume I’m joking and not bother looking up the podcast.

Also, at the time of writing, I’m halfway through my Adelaide Fringe season of this brand new show!

It’s already had some good crowds and a couple of 4-and-a-half star reviews, so I’m pretty chuffed with how it’s going.

Who should see your show, and why?

It’s for seriously weird kids aged five and up and their even weirder parents.

Any families who love to laugh together will get a kick out of this show.

There’s a lot of audience participation and no one is spared and there’s lots of boogers, dog-poop and bot-bot references, so its’s helpful if you like a dose of wrongful-ridiculousness with your comedy.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Wear pants.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

I’m always keen to see what Rob Hunter’s got to offer.

One of the truly rambunctious, silly and unexpected nights of the comedy festival.

What stands out to you about Melbourne?

To me, Melbourne is the most progressive, politically aware and elevated city in Australia. Without a doubt.

So I’ve recognised that. And written a show full of bot-bot jokes. Go figure.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

The Queen — hilarious!

George Pig — classic.

Dalai-Lama — hysterical.

Rowan Atkinson is pretty good, too.

The guy doesn’t have to do anything and it’s just funny.

He just has to blink.

He’s got such an amazing skill at making comedy from the smallest of moments.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

If you’ve seen Mr Snot Bottom and ever thought … ‘Mmm this is pretty good, but I wonder what he’s like running around doing interpretative dance in a unitard’, then come to Eurowision at The Town Hall on Saturday, April 13. It’s a glam-tastic song contest that another famous song contest has blatantly ripped off! I think we have more confetti though.

MARK TRENWITH, MR SNOT BOTTOM’S HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE, REALLY, REALLY, BAD, SHOW, APRIL 6-14, MELBOURNE TOWN HALL, LOWER TOWN HALL. BOOK TICKETS
