Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Luke Kidgell, The Tambourine Tour

Grab your tambourine and join comedian Luke Kidgell for a percussion hit that will have you jingling out loud.

Luke Kidgell.
Luke Kidgell.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

Some ripper gags and a whole lot of percussion.

This is my best show yet, so I can’t wait to do it every night!

Q&As: MEET MORE 2019 MELBOURNE COMEDY FESTIVAL PERFORMERS

COMEDY GUIDE: NEWCOMERS AND RISING STARS TO WATCH

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

I’ve been travelling around the world with my tambourine by my side.

Last year we went to Thailand and America.

I’ve also been doing a lot of radio and videos.

But the best thing I’ve done since then is watched the 1998 hit sports/comedy film BASEketball.

It was actually a really good movie and I regret not watching it sooner.

Who should see your show, and why?

Everyone with a pulse. If you don’t have a heartbeat then you are excused, otherwise, I’ll see ya there.

So looking forward to selling 7 billion tickets this year.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Laugh. It’s that simple, otherwise, you’re not getting your money’s worth.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

Nick Capper — Pig In The City. Nick is my second favourite Australian with the last name Capper. If it wasn’t for Warwick, he would be number one.

Michael Shafar — 50/50. One of the funniest and hardest working comics going around.

Go see this show.

Blake Everett — Greatest Hit(s). Nice boy, even better comic.

If you like a variety of comedy styles this is the show for you.

Fairbairn Films — Yip Yip Chahoo. My favourite online boys are also very funny on stage.

What do you love about Melbourne?

I live in Melbourne, so I expect to it just be busier and harder to get a park.

But nothing beats the atmosphere of the comedy festival, it’s my favourite time of year.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

Like every white boy perusing the internet as a teenager, I stumbled across clips of Bo Burnham, Bill Burr, and Chris D’elia.

But seeing Nick Cody’s 2015 show Beard Game Strong inspired me to actually start doing comedy.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

BYO tambourines.
