What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

Actual stand-up.

Tell us what you’ve been up to.

I’m a builder’s labourer who does stand-up six nights a week. I don’t have time to get up to anything.

THE A-Z OF COMEDIAN Q&AS

COMEDY SHOWS TO SEE WITH YOUR MATES

SHOWS TO SEE WITH YOUR PARENTS

Spruik it! Who should see your show, and why?

My show is not suitable for those aged 18-30. It’s also not suitable for anyone in charge of a blog. Everyone else is welcome, and can come to it any night of the week.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Don’t be a lowbreed. Stick with what you know, and if you’re still at a loss as to who you should see, pick someone who’s wearing a blazer.

Above all else, stay safe and God bless.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

I haven’t pored through the guide because I’m not a loser, so I don’t know everyone who’s coming, but Chris Wainhouse, Daniel Connell, Dan Rath, Mel Buttle, Bart Freebairn, Nick Cody.

What stands out to you about Melbourne and/or its people?

They’re a little soft at times, but alright, and they smell different to normal people.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

D---kheads.

OUR REVIEW: LUKE HEGGIE, HAVE THAT

Rating: ★★★★½

Reviewer: Patrick Horan

You know what to expect from Luke Heggie: a relentless stream of droll despair delivered with wondrously elaborate but economical detail, a style you will not find anywhere else at this festival.

The master of misanthropy floats like a butterfly, jabbing a range of potentially hack targets – cool dads, bogan gearheads, hipster cafes, pet owners, social media influencers among them – with lightning fists, occasionally delivering a gut punch that will leave you gasping.

Drift for a few seconds and you’ll miss a hyper-specific mental image or impeccably evocative description that you barely have time to splutter at before the next upper cut is delivered with exquisite precision.

This is Heggie’s most consistently ruthless hour yet. Genuinely peerless. Have it.

Luke Heggie, Have That, European Bier Cafe until April 21 (Melbourne Town Hall on Mondays).
