Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Lala Barlow and Robbie Smith, The Worst Little Warehouse In London

Life is a cabaret when you spend a year sharehousing in a warehouse, says musical comedy cabaret duo Lala Barlow and Robbie Smith.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

It’s a musical comedy cabaret that relives a year in our lives sharehousing in a warehouse in North London.

Expect musical parodies, dual piano playing, and the 12 different characters we lived with.

BRITISH AND IRISH COMEDIANS TO SEE THIS YEAR

TOP COMICS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE COMEDIANS

Tell us about you.

We’re a cabaret duo (and real life couple) with a background primarily in theatre.

After moving to the UK, we started developing our own show which has since toured to Edinburgh Fringe and Adelaide Fringe Festival and now we are very excitedly bringing it to our home town for Comedy Festival.

Who should see your show, and why?

For anyone that has ever lived in shared accommodation either at uni, with your family or a dodgy hostel in the middle of nowhere … you will no doubt recognise the characters in our show.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Plan for a night where you haven’t planned what to see.

Speak to the people on the street and go and see something that you would never normally see … you might be surprised.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

Double Denim — this powerhouse duo have been on the circuit for several years and we got a sneak preview of their new show in Adelaide — they are hilarious.

Garry Starr has a new show at the Malthouse and he is an INCREDIBLE talent, and brings a real dimension to his work through physical comedy.

What do you love about Melbourne?

Being Melburnians we are extremely excited to finally be performing as part of the festival.

We’ve both been to so many shows over the years on the other side of the fence, and we can’t wait to see what it will be like to be a part of it.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

Winner best Cabaret at Adelaide Fringe (Bank SA Weekly).

Finalist Best Cabaret Edinburgh Fringe.

Shortlist Best Musical at Edinburgh Fringe.
