Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Juicy, Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Play, Right?

When two comedians try to write a play on stage, you never know where the Juicy action will head.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

You can expect a strange mash-up of sketch and stand-up — sometimes it’s hard to tell when we’re playing characters and when we’re just being ourselves.

We’re both quite young and relatively new to the comedy festival, so we believe we can offer a uniquely fresh take on the state of the world.

BRITISH AND IRISH COMEDIANS TO SEE THIS YEAR

TOP COMICS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE COMEDIANS

Our show seeks to provide a critique of obnoxious individuals who you may very well recognise from your daily interactions with the public in this pitiful society in which we all live.

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

Last year we were both in a collaboratively written sketch show with six other people.

Most of the team from that production have splintered off into separate shows this year, so we’re determined to prove that we’re funnier than them.

We’ve been doing gigs at local pubs (including the Highlander and The Resistance), continuously writing and refining and improving our material.

Since last year, one half of Juicy has become the satire co-ordinator for Farrago magazine and the other half is now the director of a weekly comedy sketch show, Rowdy Laughter.

Who should see your show, and why?

Our show is great fun.

We may be a dysfunctional bickering duo, but we generally push through our conflict to present quirky, entertaining content.

We take our comedy very seriously and we have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to weird and wacky tangents and general silliness.

Our show features a range of characters from Aussie lifeguards to wankery British playwrights.

For anyone wanting a bit more from their comedy, we have additionally made it our mission to solve both climate change and feminism, before the show is done.

We’ll be phoning Scott Morrison live to find out what he thinks (if he’s still the Prime Minister on the 13th & 14th of April).

Who knows how he’ll react?

See our show and you’ll be the first to find out.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Enjoy yourselves, and why settle for one show when you could go to multiple?

Take a chance on a show you don’t know anything about and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

Ursula Carlson, Rhys Nicholson, Zoë Coombs Marr, Tom Gleeson, Garry Starr, James Acaster and Kitty Flanagan, are a few of our favourites, and we’d be keen to see their shows.

We also have friends performing in the festival, and we will definitely be going along to support them: Paul Noodle PhD Candidate, Shane Henry, Williamson and Weir, Ian McCarthy, Mudcrabs, and The Manus Island Amateur Theatrical Society.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

We both grew up watching a lot of British comedy and in writing our show did tend to get particularly distracted due to taking frequent “constructive writing breaks” in which we would binge-watch Mitchell and Webb sketches on YouTube.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

It’s the most fun you’ll have all year.
