THE A-Z OF COMEDIAN Q&AS

ULTIMATE 2019 MELBOURNE COMEDY FESTIVAL GUIDE

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

We call ourselves The General Public, and we’re a comedy trio from Sydney who all grew up together in FNQ.

We’ve been making-up provocative dance routines and creating backyard horror films since the 90s. Our show Noughty Girls: a 2000s pop-culture comedy is loosely inspired by our shared childhood experience in the noughties.

Who should see your show, and why?

If the sound of Destiny’s Child, Eminem or Fergie makes you run to the dance floor to get low, you will love this show.

If you were a skater boy who reeked of Lynx Africa, you will love this show (and feel personally attacked).

If you eagerly ripped open the sealed section on Dolly Magazine, you will ABSOLUTELY love this show!

Whether you went through high school in the 2000s or not, you will relate to this show and it’s themes of nostalgia, the survival of childhood friendship, and how pop-culture moulds us from adolescence into adulthood.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Go through the program and pick a show that you have never heard of!

It’s easy to get caught up and only attend comedy shows headlined by “big names”.

Take a punt. Step outside your comfort zone and see something new — you will be pleasantly surprised!

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

This question always gives us anxiety because it’s the part where we are meant to plug our friends shows, but we have so many friends performing!

What if we miss someone? What if we get a passive aggressive text message!?

We’re keen to see as much as possible. We’ll just wander into a venue and see whatever is on. MICF roulette.

What stands out to you about Melbourne and/or its people?

We CANNOT wait to be coffee wankers in Melbourne.

We’re going to stroll down the city’s laneways and discover new cafes and hot spots.

Honestly the coffee and food culture in Melbourne is top notch, and we cannot wait to eat our way around the city (lucky our pink tracksuits are stretchy, AMIRITE?).

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

There are so many hilarious ladies who have inspired our journey into comedy.

Women like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler who gave us amazing films and sketches in the ‘00s (Mean Girls, anyone?), Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson from Broad City, Gina Riley and Jane

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

This show isn’t just for Millennials.

The 2000s is the lens we use to focus the show, but the themes are universal.

High school is something we’ve all had to experience, and all those feelings that come with it, both while you are there, and looking back 5, 10, 20 + years later.

It’s funny to look at how much has changed over the years, but more importantly, how much hasn’t changed.

We’ve had audience members of all different ages see the show and find it hilariously relatable. You should be one of them!
