Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Gavin Lind, Shattered

Middle-aged, vegan, gay and getting divorced — life can’t be more shattered than that, says comedian Gavin Lind. Or can it?

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

My show is about my realisation that everyone hates me.

Even my dad bod hates me.

I even sought sanctuary within my vegan tribe, but they hate me, too.

Apparently vanity veganism is vegan enough.

TOP COMICS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE COMEDIANS

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

This is my fourth year at MICF, and I’m really excited to have my new show in my home town.

Over the past year I’ve taken my show to the far corners of the world including Reykjavik, Cape Town and Edinburgh.

Who should see your show, and why?

My comedy is best described as dark philosophical humour.

I’m vegan, middle-aged with an amazing and killer dad bod and getting gay divorced.

Being suddenly single at age 44 has its challenges in this day and age.

Also, I’m vegan.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Take a punt and go see someone you don’t know.

They might be someone up and coming from Melbourne or from overseas. You can say you saw them before they became famous!

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

Paul Foot is back at the festival this year so I’m excited to see what absurdities he’s bringing.

What do you love about Melbourne?

I live in Yarraville in Melbourne’s inner west, which I love. It’s a hidden gem of a village with intimate cafes, restaurants and bars and also home to the iconic Sun Theatre.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

Margaret Cho embodies fearless and honest comedy that I have always admired and what I seek to do.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

Comedy was my midlife crisis. It was meant to be a folly but developed a life of it’s own. Who said there wasn’t a place for a middle-aged, gay vegan with a dad bod in comedy?

Yeah, you’re right, there probably isn’t.
