Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Cameron James, Strawberry Blonde

From mean jokes and family gossip to quips about his own hair colour, expect an hour of laughs from comedian Cameron James.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

It’s been a full on year for all of us on planet earth, so this show is completely silly, inessential fun to distract yourself with.

Mean jokes, gossip about my family, and maybe some jokes about my hair colour.

TOP COMICS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE COMEDIANS

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

I made a show on ABC with my comedy soulmate, Becky Lucas.

I had the podcast hit of the summer with Finding Drago on ABC.

And I’m the only white guy on SBS’s The Feed.

I also went to a mate’s wedding and got sick on the party bus after.

Who should see your show, and why?

Anyone who hates people who wear shark tooth necklaces, or people who ask questions in Facebook statuses they could easily Google.

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Don’t bring food into a show.

Last year a guy was eating a fragrant massaman during my show and it ruined the whole night.

They had to spray the room out after.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

My usual faves: Becky Lucas, Tom Cashman, Guy Montgomery, Anne Edmonds, and my ex Mel Buttle.

We’re still good friends and she’s a great comedian.

It just wasn’t the right time for us to be together.

In the future, maybe.

But now, no.

Also Daniel Sloss. He needs the promotion.

What do you love about Melbourne?

I always go to Fancy Hanks with a bunch of comics for a bunch of ribs and cornbread.

Then we go do our shows sweaty, bloated and full of meat.

Melbourne is the best city for food in the country.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

My grandmother Norma is the rudest person I’ve ever met, and as a result, a comedy genius. She gets a trot out in this year’s show.

She loves my impression of her (she doesn’t).
