Melbourne International Comedy Festival comedian Q&A: Barnie Juancan, Tap Head

When you tap into the mindset of a public toilet tap, you can expect a flood of jokes, says comedian Barnie Juancan.

What can people expect from your show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival?

My show is a world first — a look at comedy from the perspective of a tap.

You use a tap to wash your hands, sure, but did you know that some of them want to be stand-up comedians?

THE A-Z OF COMEDIAN Q&AS

ULTIMATE 2019 MELBOURNE COMEDY FESTIVAL GUIDE

This is surreal comedy from an award-winning idiot from NZ.

What have you been up to since last time you were here?

Since last time I did a MICF, I went and won the Best Comedy Award at the 2018 Adelaide Fringe Festival with my best friend Trygve, for our show Different Party. That show has been touring all over the place — South Korea, Shanghai, Finland, Berlin — wow.

Apart from that, I have been sucking at getting a real job.

Who should see your show, and why?

Tap Head is part stand-up comedy, part surreal theatre — so it is a good show for people wanting to see something a bit different from the usual fare.

Don’t worry, it still has loads of jokes (that are funny) but also strange dreamlike things and moving images involving umbrellas …

What’s your No.1 tip for people coming to see a show at the comedy festival?

Sit in the front row.

Which other comedians/shows are you keen to see at this year’s festival, and why?

Paul Foot — he’s a great wonk head.

Also my pal Ben Russell, and also Josh Glance.

Very keen to see Zoe Coombs Marr’s Bossy Bottom again because she is a genius.

What do you love about Melbourne?

When it comes to Melbourne, I really love the Yarra.

I’m a big river boy.

Who or what is your comedic inspiration, and why?

Ren and Stimpy — when they busted on to the scene in the ’90s they really shook my brains up.

I was an impressionable 13 year old.

Also, from that time the album Three Feet High And Rising by De La Soul … that album and Ren and Stimpy really shook my brains around and showed me real joy.

Anything else you want us to know about you or your show?

It has wonderful sound design.

And it is in a comfortable room.

You will have a near cinematic experience at this show …
