FOUL-MOUTH puppet and comedy star Randy is off to New York’s famous Theatre Row for an eight week engagement.
Randy, whose Anti-Crisis show just opened at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, has shortened his run of hometown dates to catch a break in the Big Apple.
“The city that never sleeps will need a nap once I’m finished with it,” Randy boasted. “That said, no-one knows who I am over there. I’ve never played in America before.
“It could go two ways — in a week, I’ll end up on (US talk show) Conan, or I’ll get 10 or 20 people a night for eight weeks, and no-one will ever speak of it again.
“But I’m pumped. I’m coming in swinging.”
He will perform his award-winning show, Randy Writes A Novel, at the Clurman Theatre, on West 42nd St from April 18.
“There are a few Aus-centric references I’ll need to work on. ‘Gumtree’ will become ‘Craigslist’,” Randy said. “I had a 20-minute rant about how much I hate America. I’ll probably just cut that out. And I won’t do the flag burning bit.”
Randy, who lives in Brunswick, shot to fame with his stand-up and television appearances with comedian Sammy J. Their ABC-TV sitcom Ricketts Lane in screened in the US on NBC-TV’s comedy channel See-So.
His Anti-Crisis show, at the Melbourne Town Hall until April 14, is about manufactured faith and coming to terms with a higher power. “I take the deepest topic sitting in the existential realm of my brain, and add a bunch of poo jokes. It balances out.”
