YOU definitely won’t need to check your phone during a fabulous and fun-filled hour spent with this Guy.

GUY Montgomery places his phone on a nearby table and observes that the main reason most of the audience might have for wanting to check their phones during his show is to take note of the time.

So the Kiwi-born, New York-based stand-up comic wheels out a giant analogue clock on to the stage, thereby negating any temptations. And sure enough, the packed Portico Room audience keeps their phones in their pockets — bar one girl, who snaps a couple of quick photos.

Fair enough. This guy’s easy on the eye, with an extremely engaging and affable stage presence. He’s the sort of bloke you’d want to hang out with.

Montgomery bemoans his self-confessed addiction to his phone, labelling it a “wily temptress” and noting that checking his social feeds for an allotted 15 minutes first thing in the morning soon turns into two hours — “and that’s another morning off to a flyer”.

Being on stage, he says, is one of the few times he can have a “digital holiday”.

Montgomery has a terrific knack for observational comedy that segues into skillful storytelling. His eye for detail and natural flair for narrative keep the laughs coming loud and fast.

From a Metropolitan Museum of Art visit to a Margaret River winery tour, from tackling the supermarket veg aisle to trying to make friends via the uberPool, Montgomery maintains a cracking jocular pace.

But does he manage to stay off his phone for the whole hour? That’s just one of the myriad reasons to see this smart, highly entertaining show.
