THE sign outside Melbourne Town Hall’s Regent Room warns that this show contains explicit language, drug and sexual references. Inside, the venue is sold out on a school night.
Comedian and TV writer Becky Lucas welcomes her audience, disses the tight security, bemoans that showgoers can’t bring in a drink, then launches straight into the question: Where would you be in a human centipede?
Well, we can’t say we weren’t warned.
SAM CAMPBELL: DEVILISH GENIUS SOARS TO LOFTY HEIGHTS
FERN BRADY: FORMER STRIPPER FINDS HER CALLING
After she was born, Lucas says she rolled her eyes and said, “Really?” That droll shtick is a winning formula which she applies to her material, from moving in with her BF (“We could be together for the rest of our lease”) to waking up on the couch to a women’s soccer match on TV (“I left it on — here girls, have some ratings.”)
Lucas says she suffers from low self-esteem — and milks that for gags — but her show suggests otherwise. She is extremely comfortable on-stage, boasts a near-flawless delivery and flow, and has the deadpan pause-and-effect down pat.
JAMES VEITCH: TECH BANTER WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE
HEATH FRANKLIN’S CHOPPER IS GOD’S RIGHT-HAND MAN
She’s like the mischief-making ringleader at school who never gets caught because butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth.
Towards the end of the show, Lucas comments that reviewers often find her material “shallow”. Not this reviewer.
This is slick, whip-smart observational comedy at its finest.
