IN their worldwide 1975 hit, they promised that "Love Will Keep Us Together".

And it did, for 39 years.

But no more.

American pop duo the Captain and Tennille have filed for divorce.

Besides their best-known hit - which still gets a run at many a wedding reception - the duo released five albums, four of which were certified gold and one of which was certified platinum.

Daryl Dragon - the Captain - and Cathryn Antoinette Tennille met at an audition and both ended up playing keyboards for the Beach Boys for a time, before launching their own easy-listening, radio-friendly pop act.

The couple married in 1974 and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1975. They also performed for the Queen and US President Gerald Ford.

Dragon told gossip website TMZ: "I don't know why she filed. I gotta figure it out for myself first."

The duo confirmed in 2010 that Dragon was suffering from a "Parkinsons-like condition" which prevented him from playing music.
