Oscar winning actor Sean Penn, 61, and his Australian actress wife Leila George, 29, have filed for divorce after one year of marriage.

The Australian actress filed for divorce from the Oscar winner after just one year of marriage.

George filed divorce documents on Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to TMZ.

The reason behind the split is currently unclear.

The Milk actor began dating the Mortal Engines star – who is the daughter of US actor Vincent D’Onofrio – back in 2016, before they secretly wed in 2020.

It was revealed the couple secretly tied the knot in August last year when philanthropist Irena Medavoy – wife of Black Swan producer Mike Medavoy – posted a congratulations on Instagram.

She wrote: “We are so happy for @leilageorge #seanpenn getting married. We love you. Thank you for being like family a son to mike we are over the moon to find your soulmate true partner @coreresponse true love that also changes the world for better

“You are meant to be together God Bless you both and the family you have joined. Introducing the Penn’s #marriage.”

Among the photos of the couple was a photo of a ring with a sapphire, which appeared to be the wedding ring.

The marriage was further confirmed when the couple received a congratulation message from Josh Brolin – who starred with Sean in Milk and Gangster Squad.

He wrote on his Instagram Story: “Happy Wedding lovebirds. Our salutations to a beautiful marriage. Sean and Leila.”

George was Penn’s third wife, having previously been married to Madonna, 63, and Robin Wright, 55.

Before his most recent marriage, Penn was in a relationship with US actress Charlize Theron in late 2013 until they called it off in 2015.

While Penn is known for his impressive filmography, George’s acting career is still taking off.

She is best known for her roles in Mortal Engines, Animal Kingdom, and The Kid.

Before pursuing her acting career, George studied at the Sydney Film School.

She recently completed filming two movies – The Long Home and Solus – but a release date has not been confirmed.

Despite coming from a famous family, not much additional information is available on the young actress.

Her father, D’Onofrio, is best known for starring in Men in Black and Law & Order. He was in a relationship with Australian-Italian actress Greta Scacchi in the 1990s, when they welcomed George in 1992.

They split soon after, with D’Onofrio marrying Dutch model Carin van der Donk in 1997. They are still together.
