PRINCESS Diana’s $16,000 wedding dress remains arguably the most iconic royal bridal gown in history.
The extravagant meringue silk taffeta gown worn by the blushing 20 year-old Lady Diana Spencer was a vision of 1980s glamour — symbolic of the fairy tale the world believed it was witnessing. Inspiration from the dress had come from researching royal weddings from history, and from films — including Gone With The Wind, perhaps explains the gown’s tiny waist and sweeping skirt.

Diana could turn to her family’s blue blood archives for her crowning glory, dazzling in the Spencer tiara which the UK press have speculated Meghan Markle will wear when she marries Prince Harry.
London-based Aussie design duo Ralph and Russo have apparently hand-stitched her $180,000 bridal gown — which, like Kate Middleton’s before her, will draw comparisons to the one worn by Harry’s mother all those years ago.
The Duchess of Cambridge took a more conservative approach, choosing British designer Sarah Burton, of Alexander McQueen, to create the gown she wore to marry Prince William at Westminster Abbey in 2011. It featured a V-neckline, satin bodice and long lace sleeves — a trend which has been heavily copied ever since.
Australian-born Princess Mary married Denmark’s Prince Frederik in 2004, wearing a satin ivory gown by Danish designer Uffe Frank.
It featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and lace veil, which she wore with her hair slicked back into an up-do (unlike the British royals who favoured their hair out and in soft curls).
But no one has done over-the-top better than Fergie when she married Prince Andrew at Westminster Abbey in 1986. She wore an elaborate flower crown, with a sheer veil, and a 17-foot long train.
