Queen Elizabeth II death: Monarch spotted in clouds moments after passing

A royal fan has reportedly spotted an outline of the late monarch in a random cloud formation, just moments after the Queen’s death was confirmed.

A UK woman claims to have spotted the late Queen Elizabeth II on her drive home, in the hour after the monarch died.

Leanne Bethell, who lives in the town of Telford in England’s West Midlands, shared a photo of what appeared to be the late monarch in her signature hat.

“Driving home and Lacey starts shouting OMG! I panicked … Then she pointed this image out in the clouds,” Ms Bethell shared on Facebook.

The image has gone viral in the hours since it was shared at a 4.05am AEDT. At the time of publishing, the post has recorded more than 16,000 likes and reactions, 9600 comments and over 33,000 shares.

On Friday morning at 3.30am AEDT, the Royal Family confirmed that the Queen died “peacefully” in Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She was 96 and has been the longest-serving British royal, after ascending the thrown in 1952, at the age of 25.

Outside Buckingham Palace, leagues of mourners also gathered to pay tribute to the royal. A double rainbow was also seen outside the palace, as people sang “God Save the Queen”.

In the aftermath of her death, the crown was immediately passed onto her eldest son, King Charles.

Issuing a statement, he said the Queen’s death was a “moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family”.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

In the hours prior to Queen Elizabeth’s passing, members of the royal family rushed to Balmoral. Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Prince Andrew, and Prince William were in attendance, while Prince Harry travelled to Aberdeen alone, with wife Meghan Markle remaining in London.

The Royal Family confirmed King Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and return to London on Friday, local time.
