Met Gala 2021: Best and worst dressed stars at Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Gala

Kim Kardashian left a lot to the imagination at the Met Gala, where she arrived in a full face-covering from Balenciaga. See the photos.

Met Gala 2021: Best looks

After a year off due to Covid, the Met Gala made a stylish return to New York, with stars making dramatic entrances – none more so than Kim Kardashian West.

Covered head-to-toe in form-fitting Balenciaga, Kardashian West arrived solo in the dress, tights, train and pointy boots combo – complete with a signature long ponytail.

With her face completely covered, the outfit was reminiscent of a Balenciaga ensemble her estranged husband Kanye West wore to his Donda listening event recently.

West is said to have designed Kim’s outfit and given his ex “the courage to push the envelope with creativity and people’s imagination through art,” per TMZ.

US Vogue noted that West’s creation – as worn by Kim – “reflects his love of minimalism, (creative director Demna) Gvasalia’s, and Kardashian’s innate glamour”.

“The stark black gown with matching mask and train was unlike anything Kardashian—or anyone else—has worn to the Met before,” the publication said.

Posing on the steps of the Met, Kardashian West fuelled speculation she was actually there with Kanye.

However, per the New York Times, she posed for the cameras with a man wearing a matching outfit, believed to be West’s long-time collaborator Gvasalia.

Also wearing Balenciaga was Rihanna, who posed with rapper boyfriend A$AP Rocky, who was dressed in Venice Beach-based Californian brand, Erl.

Wearing Saint Laurent, Hailey Bieber attended with husband Justin Bieber – who looked less than impressed as he wore a suit and clutched a carry-bag from his own label, Drew.

Megan Fox turned heads in a lace-up red Dundas dress, with a low-cut neckline as she debuted a new rockabilly-style fringe.

Speaking to Vogue, Fox said the outfit reflected the Met Gala’s theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” because “it’s worn by an American girl”. She said the gown was painstakingly made “one bead at a time”.

Zoe Kravitz and Kendall Jenner wore near-naked dresses, with Jenner’s Givenchy outfit inspired by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and teamed with a thick diamond choker neckpiece.

Australian singer Troye Sivan wore one of the looks of the night: a form-fitting custom Cartier gown, teamed with chunky stiletto heels.

Sivan – who spent much of Covid in his home town of Melbourne – joined fashion’s A-list in Manhattan, including Met Gala co-chair Billie Eilish in a peach Oscar de la Renta ballgown.

It’s been a big sartorial week for Youth singer Sivan, who sported a cropped, midriff-baring Fendi suit (with long socks and black patent Oxford shoes) to the MTV VMAs.

Wearing Prada, supermodel Gigi Hadid made her Met Gala return, describing her outfit – a strapless white gown – as “keeping it simple”.

There was one notable absence: Kylie Jenner, who announced that she wouldn’t be attending the Met Gala.

“I’m so sad I couldn’t make it this year,” Jenner, 24, wrote on Instagram, adding: “I can’t want to see all the looks.

Page Six reported that Jenner pulled out of the Met Gala at the last-minute. “Kylie’s pregnant and it’s a lot to take on, going to such a public event,” a source told Page Six.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala has officially returned after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Eilish, 19, made history as the ball’s youngest-ever co-chair, sharing the duties with tennis star Naomi Osaka, actor Timothée Chalamet (who wore Converse sneakers) and poet Amanda Gorman.

“Each of the Met’s four co-hosts embodies the defining factor of American style: individualism,” Vogue shared in May, adding that the group has “developed a distinct visual language for their public personas, one that is informed by the legacy of iconic fashion made in the USA.”
