Meghan Markle caught in ‘royal lie’

Meghan Markle has repeatedly claimed she didn’t know much about the royal family before meeting Prince Harry, but a resurfaced blog post proves that’s not entirely true.

An old blog post featured on Meghan Markle’s now-defunct website The Tig has revealed the Duchess of Sussex might not have been as clueless about the royal family before marrying Prince Harry as she has long claimed.

The post — written in 2014 while the former actress was still starring on the US drama Suits — revealed that she dreamt of being a “royal rebel” rather than “a Cinderella” as a child – as she reflected, negatively, on the “pomp and circumstance” and “endless conversation” about the wedding of “Princess Kate”, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The resurfaced post refutes Ms Markle’s repeated claims that she knew very little about the royal family before meeting Prince Harry, who wrote in his memoir Spare that the future Duchess knew “almost nothing” about his relatives, and had never even Googled them.

He later said that Ms Markle had no idea who Prince Andrew was, thinking he was the Queen’s assistant because he was holding the monarch’s handbag.

However, the 2014 blog post clearly showed that she knew all about Prince William and Princess Catherine’s 2011 wedding – and that she had formed strong opinions about the royal family years before she met her future husband.

“Little girls dream of being princesses,” Ms Markle wrote in the post, before claiming, “I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power.

“For those of you unfamiliar with the ’80s cartoon reference, She-Ra is the twin sister of He-Man and a sword-wielding royal rebel known for her strength,” Ms Markle wrote.

“We’re definitely not talking about Cinderella here.”

She went on to say that many women keep their “childhood fantasy” of becoming a princess – before making an obvious dig at the public fascination surrounding the royal couple’s 2011 wedding.

“Grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy,” she wrote.

“Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate.”

The old post does call into question her repeated claims that she had little knowledge of the monarchy or about any senior members of the royal family before she met Prince Harry in 2016.

During the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021, she told the media mogul that she didn’t grow up “knowing much about the royal family” – despite one of her childhood best friends claiming that she was “fascinated” by them during her youth.

Ms Markle founded the Tig website in 2014, which she used to share her views on everything from feminism to her passion for philanthropy, food and wine tips.

She also interviewed famous friends including tennis star Serena Williams and actress Priyanka Chopra.

She shut down the site in 2017 just before announcing her engagement to Prince Harry who she married in 2018, becoming the Duchess of Sussex.
