Kate Middleton has returned to the high seas and looked ready to embrace her competitive side as she made an appearance at the Sail Grand Prix (Sail GP) at Trinity Pier in Plymouth.
The Duchess of Cambridge visited the global sailing competition in support of 1851 Trust as she took part in activities promoting sustainability before joining a friendly “Commonwealth Race” alongside Britain’s team.
For the land-based part of her visit, Kate got into the nautical spirit as she wore a classic navy blue sweater with white nautical stripes.
She paired the top with white linen shorts featuring gold buttons by Holland Taylor, white Superga “Cotu” sneakers, and small gold hoops.
A quick outfit change then saw the 40-year-old don a wetsuit and join the Great Britain team in a race against the skilled New Zealand team, led by Sir Ben Ainslie — the most successful sailor in Olympic history and co-founder of the 1851 Trust.
As she climbed aboard the catamaran to join her new team she was pictured in an orange safety helmet and a pair of SunGod Great Britain SailGP Limited Edition sunglasses.
The SailGP competition, which is being held in Plymouth, England for the second year running, saw nine international teams take part in short races on high-speed catamarans.
“Sport Protecting our planet. 1851 trust’s Protect our Future program equips young people with skills and knowledge to understand climate science and take positive action, protecting nature, people, our oceans and the planet,” the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge captioned a series of pictures on Instagram.
“Taking to the water with @benainslie and the @sailgpgbr team, it’s clear that the world’s first climate positive sport is fast, frenetic and fiercely competitive!.”
The Duchess is a royal patron of the 1851 Trust, which aims to inspire young people to explore science and technology through sport.
During her visit she also met with young participants as they made seagrass mats that will be planted off Plymouth Sound, which will help improve marine health and contribute to blue carbon capture.
While planting seagrass and getting to know the children involved with the charity, Kate allowed one young girl to wear her GBR grey hat.
The occasion marked Duchess Kate’s first public sailing excursion post-pandemic.
And it’s not the first time she has showed off her competitive side.
In March, she took part in a sailing regatta in The Bahamas at the end of her Royal Caribbean Tour with Prince William.
Posting a video of the race on Instagram at the time, they wrote: “Taking to the sea yesterday for a very special regatta here in The Bahamas. Thank you to the crew for braving the rain!
“It was a close race … She was all smiles as she prepared for her race and beamed despite the cloudy weather – which could bring about choppy waters.”
