Italian paramedic ‘stole Rolex from Sopranos star James Gandolfini as he lay dying’

A COURT has heard the shocking final moments of Sopranos star James Gandolfini as he was paid one final indignity.

AN Italian paramedic has been accused of stealing a Rolex from Sopranos star James Gandolfini as he lay dying.

Claudio Bevilacqua, 43, allegedly took the $4000 Submariner watch after the 51-year-old actor suffered a massive heart attack at the Boscolo Exedra Hotel in Rome in June 2013.

Prosecutors say Bevilacqua, an ambulance stretcher-bearer, took advantage of the chaos in the hotel room to pocket the valuable accessory, The Telegraph in the UK reports.

Two members of the hotel’s security staff reportedly noticed the watch was missing and it was reported as stolen on an insurance form filed by Gandolfini’s family.

Bevilacqua did not attend the start of the trial on Monday and has not entered a plea. His trial has been adjourned until November.

Gandolfini was visiting the Italian capital with his wife Deborah Lin and his 13-year-old son Michael when he collapsed in the bathroom of his suite. He had been due to appear at a film festival in the resort town of Taormina in Sicily.

The American actor rose to fame in the 1993 film True Romance, but became a household name for playing New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano in HBO series The Sopranos.

He won three Emmys for his portrayal of the troubled gangster and was described by critics and his co-stars as “one of the greatest actors of all time.”

David Chase, The Sopranos creator who cast Gandolfini, said the actor was “a genius”.

“Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that,” Chase said, following Gandolfini’s death.

“A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. I remember telling him many times, ‘You don’t get it. You’re like Mozart’. There would be a silence at the other end of the phone.”

Steve Van Zandt, a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band and Gandolfini’s co-star in The Sopranos, tweeted his sadness at Gandolfini’s passing: “I have lost a brother and a best friend. The world has lost one of the greatest actors of all time.”

Gandolfini was born in New Jersey to Italian parents. He reportedly left a $100 million fortune on his death.
