HUNGER Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence is taking the blame for Jennifer Lawrence's shocking new pixie haircut.

"She used to give me a hard time about the hair because I was always saying, 'Dye your hair, dye your hair. We need your hair dyed, no wigs!'" the director, 43, told E! News. "And then of course, dying her hair fried her hair, so she had to cut her hair."

The 23-year-old "Hunger Games" star revealed her new haircut on her Facebook page last week.

While Lawrence didn't say whether or not he liked his star's new haircut, he did say he feel at fault for the change.

"At first I didn't realise it was messed up," the filmmaker said. "I thought she was cutting it just to wear wigs to make me mad, but it wasn't the case. We actually fried her hair, which is sad. I feel bad."

For her part, Lawrence said she chopped off her hair because she was tired of dealing with it.

Because of her new 'do, Lawrence will wear a wig for the filming of the final chapter, which will be split into two parts, of the "Hunger Games" saga, "Mockingjay."

"Catching Fire" hits theatres on November 22.
