Georgia Love responds to vicious wedding tweet pile-on

Georgia Love has slammed those who criticised her for complaining that her wedding plans have been impacted by border closures.

Tasmania extends border closure to Dec 1

She’s vowed to “never stop calling people out” on social media in the past, and this week, former Bachelorette Georgia Love is at it again.

After posting a lighthearted tweet fearing she may have to change her wedding plans for the second time this year, the journalist became the centre of a vicious pile-on from followers labelling her woes “first world problems” amid the global pandemic.

Responding to the avalanche of criticism, the 31-year-old Channel 10 reporter, whose mother died in 2016, defended herself by laying bare exactly how difficult the pandemic has been on her and her family, wedding plans aside.

She concluded that her wedding disappointment “does not take away from anyone’s pain or suffering”.

Last month, Love and winner of the 2016 Bachelorette Lee Elliott, announced they had swapped their Italian nuptials for a ceremony in Tasmania, but yesterday’s border announcement cast a question mark over the event.

“So like HOW FUNNY IS IT when you cancel your Italy wedding and book it for Tasmania instead hahahahahahahaha and then the Premier shuts the borders til at least December HAHAHAHAHA OMG SO FUNNY I’M TOTALLY FINE!!!!!,” Love wrote to her followers.

While those in a similar situation felt her pain, the tweet rubbed many the wrong way.

“I can’t visit my ailing grandmother in WA because they won’t grant me an exemption until she is close to death or dies and then I can only enter for a two week quarantine and her funeral, after which I have to get out immediately. Keep whining about your Italian holiday, love,” one follower wrote.

“We are in a pandemic. Many people are dying. Your party can wait,” another added, with one more posting: “Oh no how ever will you go on. Without an Italian holiday. My wife is stuck overseas. We got married in Feb, we have spent a week together as a married couple, haven’t seen her since.”

Jumping to defend the star, a fan chimed in: “Wow, why so much hate from so many people? Guys just because someone is a public figure, doesn’t mean they’re not allowed to be upset about everyday things. I’m so grateful that my wedding was last year but guess what? That means I’ve been pregnant during a pandemic instead! Fun!”

“My Nanna passed away at the start of the first Covid lockdown. We couldn’t say goodbye or hug my mum & couldn‘t have a funeral. But I can still empathise with you. It sucks you cant have your wedding. It’s not fair. The only people we should be mad at are the ones not wearing masks,” another rightly pointed out.

Responding to the uproar herself today, Love said Twitter “really sucks sometimes”.

“I literally rang in 2020 watching people’s home burn down,” she wrote of covering the devastating summer bushfires for Channel 10.

“I’ve had to be the one in charge of talks with an aged facility about my own grandmother because her daughter – my mother – died & I am still grieving this deeply,” she added.

“I may no longer have a job in my career profession that I have put my life’s work into & where my passion lies,” she said, alluding to recent redundancies at the network.

“So you know what? I’m allowed to comment on the fact it’s a bit sh***y my wedding has been affected too. This does not take away from anyone else’s pain or suffering,” she concluded.

The former reality star is no stranger to a social media storm.

In October last year, she spoke out after comments on a photo of her with fiance Elliott left her feeling “really, really sick”, posting a lengthy rant about people asking if she’s pregnant.

“I’m not pregnant. No I haven’t just eaten pasta or had a big lunch. This is just how I look. And I’m really, really sick of being made to feel like it’s not good enough,” the Channel 10 journalist wrote.

She and Elliott were engaged last September.
