Oscar-winner Tom Hanks causes a stir on social media with vegemite post while in self-isolation

A post by coronavirus-infected and Australia-bound Tom Hanks is causing a stir on social media, with many attempting to correct the way the American actor-filmmaker spreads his vegemite on toast.
The post showing the breakfast meal, alongside a stuffed kangaroo and vegemite tube, was uploaded to Instagram late Sunday while he and his wife, Rita Wilson, are self-isolating after being diagnosed with coronavirus on Thursday.
The Oscar-winning actor is currently in Australia, where he is shooting Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis Presley bio-pic.
Hanks’ post read: “Thanks to the helpers. Let’s take care of ourselves and each other. Hanx”
However, his post was met with a mixed reaction, with some saying “That’s definitely a ‘foreigners’ spread” and “That’s way too much vegemite”, and others saying “Good on ya mate!!”.
On Twitter, where the post was also uploaded to, users uploaded ‘how to’ pictures to show the 63-year-old how to truly spread vegemite on toast the Australian way.

Hanks’ post comes days after Aussie singer Amy Shark tweeted the actor saying he could use her Gold Coast home for the 14-day isolation period.
“Leave your germs everywhere I don’t care,” she said.
“Netflix n Wi-Fi password on the kitchen bench.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hanks and Wilson were two of seven new cases were reported in Queensland on Thursday.

An official with Queensland Health, the Australian government department which is overseeing efforts to control the outbreak of the disease in that area, did not name the couple but said all of the new cases “contracted the illness outside Australia and travelled to Queensland with the virus.”
Luhrmann has spoken to the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and has confirmed his entire cast and crew will be tested for the virus.
“We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too,” Hanks posted on Instagram, referring to he and his wife Rita Wilson, also 63.
“To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive.”
The revelation sent the Nine Network into panic, with Wilson having appeared on Today Extra last week.
Nine said it was taking “precautionary measures”.

“Nine today has taken action in line with our crisis response plan around a visit to our studio by Ms Rita Wilson on Monday this week, for an appearance on Today Extra with David Campbell and Belinda Russell. Our actions are in line with the guidelines set out by the Government and Health Authorities,” a network spokesman said in a statement.
“Those who were in prolonged contact with Ms Wilson have been tested and are self-isolating for 14 days. Our premises is currently being thoroughly cleaned in all areas she visited and we are encouraging our employees to monitor their health and practise good hygiene.
“Tracy Grimshaw is not hosting ACA tonight as a precautionary measure since she had minor surgery last week. Karl Stefanovic will host in her place. Arrangements for hosts for Today Extra are still being confirmed.”
Earlier, in a statement, the Hollywood screen icon said: “The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed”.
“We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?
“We’ll keep the world posted and updated.”
Hanks’ co-stars on Luhrmann’s film include Rufus Sewell, Austin Butler, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Olivia DeJonge.
The Forrest Gump plays Presley’s longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker, alongside Butler as Elvis.
Warner Bros. confirmed it was working with health authorities to ensure everyone in the production is safe, according to Deadline.
“We have been made aware that a company member from our Elvis feature film, which is currently in pre-production in The Gold Coast, Australia, has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus),” the studio said.
“We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual.
“The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world.
“The individual who tested positive for COVID-19 is currently receiving treatment.”
Australian director Luhrmann’s Elvis movie is due to open in October 2021.
Filming has been postponed due to the outbreak.
Greyhound – the latest movie from two-time Oscar-winner Hanks – was scheduled to premiere May 8th but Sony announced today the film will be postponed to June 12, The Sun reported.
Hanks has two other movies that are expected to be released later this year including Universal’s News of the World, which has a Christmas Day opening slot.
Hanks’ son Chet took to Instagram to provide an update on his parents’ condition.
“I just got off the phone with them. They both are fine. They’re not even that sick. They’re not worried about it. They’re not trippin’, but they’re going through the necessary health precautions, obviously,” Chet said.
“I appreciate everyone’s concern and the well wishes but I think it’s all going to be alright but I appreciate it and just, everybody stay safe out there. Much love.”
Meantime, current data suggest the COVID-19 mortality rate for those aged 60-69 is about 3.6 per cent.
The total mortality rate is about 4.7 per cent for men compared with 2.8 per cent for women.
Last Thursday, singer-songwriter Wilson performed at the ballroom of the Emporium Hotel South Bank in Brisbane. Their son Truman was in the audience.
She then performed at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday night. Hanks said in his statement they would remain in isolation “for as long as public health and safety requires”.
BRODERICK’S SISTER HAS CORONAVIRUS
Matthew Broderick‘s sister has tested positive for coronavirus — and is in isolation in an intensive care unit with “a severe form of pneumonia,” she revealed through her church.
“I am so thankful for your prayers as I have been ill,” Reverend Janet Broderick, 64, wrote to her congregation at All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills on Wednesday.
“Everyone has been so good to me and supported me with prayers.”
Despite her serious condition, she assured worshippers, “I am through the worst of this and very much on the mend.”

Broderick — the older sister of the 57-year-old Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star — fell ill in February while attending a conference in Louisville, Kentucky, that was attended by representatives of 500 churches nationwide, her church said.
When she first sought medical care, it was deemed to be “a viral syndrome” that “did not warrant further concern,” the church said.
She went to LA’s Cedars Sinai Medical Centre after someone who had been at the same conference tested positive — and was then also confirmed to have COVID-19, the church said.
Rev. Broderick said her “family have been so so loving and cared for me so well.”
“Jesus has been so close to me the whole time and scriptures have upheld me no kidding,” she added.
“Even at my worst, I felt his hand on me.”
Her actor brother is due to start previews on Broadway tomorrow alongside his wife, Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker, in a revival of the Neil Simon comedy Plaza Suite.

NAOMI’S BIZARRE VIRUS OUTFIT
Supermodel Naomi Campbell has taken her anti-germ fashion to the next-level, sporting a full hazmat suit and mask amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The British fashion icon showed she wasn’t taking any chances amid the coronavirus chaos, as she kitted herself out in the precautionary outfit.
Posing for pictures at LAX, she captioned the Instagram post: “Safety First Next Level.”
One of the snaps showed her hands encased in a pink pair of latex gloves, The Sun reports.
Another post showed Campbell looking out of a car window while still kitted out.
The catwalk star received a mixed reaction from fans, with some accusing her of making light of the coronavirus outbreak. One follower said: “I really love you but looks like you’re trying to make something funny out of it. People are dying, struggling … and you as a philanthropist should not take this lightly.”
Another added: “Greatly inappropriate.” And: “ … this is not fashion and not funny.”
Campbell – who previously went viral with her extreme pre-flight plane seat cleaning regimen – last week posted an Instagram story of herself in the gym, skipping rope while wearing latex gloves.
“Don’t forget to wear gloves,” Campbell wrote.

Kate Langbroek has revealed the reality of life under lockdown in Italy amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The former radio star said she and her family – who moved to Italy last year – were holed up inside their apartment in Bologna, as the country tries to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
“It is the trip of a lifetime, maybe not the lifetime we imagined,” Langbroek told Sunrise today.

“Until last night, we were living relatively normally.” She said that changed when the whole country “was basically declared a red zone”.
“There’s no gyms, no cinemas … supermarkets are only Monday-Friday during the day,” she added.
Langbroek posted a photo with a friend in an empty bar.
“We ventured out for a drink at cocktail hour – normally a vibrant and fun Italian tradition and prelude to dinner … the guy at the bar sadly told us they had to close at 6pm,” Langbroek wrote.
In a separate interview on The Project last night, Langbroek said Italian locals were not panic-buying toilet paper – unlike the mood in Australia, which is in the midst of a shortage.
“They’re (Italians) not stockpiling toilet paper and slugging it out in the aisles of Woolies over a six pack of double ply,” she said.
“At some point you have to have to have faith in the system.
“There’s no school so kids aren’t getting it from each other and spreading it through the community. Aside from anything else, we’re home with our freaking kids all day! Forget coronavirus, could anything be worse than that?,” she joked.

Posing naked in a bath full of toilet rolls, the former Bachelorette star confessed she had always advanced-purchased the daily essential.

Monk is not the only celebrity to have taken to social media in the wake of coronavirus.
From supermodels posting mask selfies to DIY toilet paper shields, celebrities have shared their coronavirus experiences on Instagram.
This has included Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid posting facial mask selfies on planes, to Australian celebrities making light of the threat with bizarre internet memes.
Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow – known for her eyebrow-raising wellness site, Goop – was defiant about her facial mask use.
“Paranoid? Prudent? Panicked? Placid? Pandemic? Propaganda? Paltrow’s just going to go ahead and sleep with this thing on the plane. I’ve already been in this movie. Stay safe. Don’t shake hands. Wash hands frequently,” Paltrow wrote on Instagram, under a photo showing her black facial mask.
Kourtney Kardashian famously arrived in Paris this week wearing a similar mask style, as if it were a fashion accessory.
