It has been branded the ‘ugliest’ and most ‘controversial’ shoe trend on the internet — now, the divisive high-heeled thong is back.

The bizarre sanadal is being worn by Kim Kardashian, her supermodel sister Kendall Jenner, and even Australian style stars Lara Worthington and Christine Centenera.

Kanye West’s Yeezy line is charging more than $1200 a pair for perspex heeled “thong sandals”, and they’re also being done by luxury brand Gianvito Rossi ($800) and filtering down to copycats like Spanish chain store Zara.

West’s line includes stiletto-heeled thongs and others with a wedge, while some of the cheaper versions feature a tiny kitten heel.

US Vogue branded the trend this season’s “most controversial sandal” in response to a pair that Jenner, the world’s top-paid model, wore in Mykonos, also noting that Kardashian had been “sporting (thong heels) obsessively”

Currently a huge trend in the European and American summer season, leading Australian stylist Elliot Garnaut is already seeing the thong high-heel trend on local celebrities.

“I’ve used them on my clients recently, best worn to elevate a casual look such as denim and a tee or a summer dress to give that sense of effortless charm,” Garnaut told News Corp Australia.

“The wedge rubber Havaianas are out, but the heeled kitten thong is here to stay.”

The heeled thong is the latest in a long line of late ’90s, early noughties, trends — once worn by Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton circa The Simple Life — that are seeing a resurgence.

“Synonymous with being nothing short of totally dated, celebrities who are turning more and more to the first decade of the new millennium have solidified the trend as one that has landed even on home soil,” Garnaut said.

“On home soil, every fashion forward editor, socialite and influencer has been trotting around in a pair from Mara and Mine.”

Garnaut said heeled thongs were “best worn to elevate a casual look such as denom and a tee, or a dress.”

Stylist Lana Wilkinson — known for her start-studded clientele that includes some of the country’s top WAGs — said the heeled thong’s appeal was to give the illusion of longer, more toned limbs.

“The ‘barely-there’ design can elongate your legs,” Wilkinson said.

“I think we may see more of this trend across our Instagram feeds.”
