Eva Mendes has told of the funny moment her and husband Ryan Gosling had with an Aussie dad while trick or treating in Bondi.

If there is any time you want to have some good sweets in your house, it’s when Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes come knocking on your door trick or treating with their two children.

Or better yet, if you’re a 13-year-old girl, you would want to hope your dad lets you know if there are two Hollywood stars standing at your front door.

Hilariously, one dad in Bondi was caught off-guard on Halloween this year, without lollies and without a clue who the famous family were asking for them.

“We went to one house, they were out of candy and the dad answered,” Mendes told news.com.au on Friday.

“He was so sweet. He didn’t know who we were. Ryan had a mask on, I looked like I don’t even know what, I let my kids paint my face. And then he found candy for us, which was so sweet.”

Mendes and Gosling, and their daughters Amada, 6, and Esmeralda, 8, then left to continue their trick or treating.

At the same time the man’s daughter found out who her dad just greeted at their house.

“As we’re walking down the street I see this like sweet, pretty lady running down with a bunch of kids behind her running,” Mendes laughed.

“She was like ‘I’m sorry this is so not Bondi but we have to get a picture’. She was like ‘it’s my daughter’s thirteenth birthday’ so I said we’ve got to do it.

“They were lovely, we spoke to them for a while and that was great. Everybody was so cool.”

Mendes, who is in Australia while Gosling shoots his new film The Fall Guy, said she had enjoyed flying under the radar while down under.

“Australians are so cool, and just so warm and we feel so welcomed,” she said.

“People really understand that we’re just a regular family at a park. I’m going through the same stuff another mum is going through, you know, lugging around a snack bag and my kids don’t want to leave the park and there’s crying – it’s a whole thing,” Mendes said.

“I got to say I do miss my mum a lot, my mum’s back home and she’s not feeling well these days. I miss her but being here in this beautiful city with beautiful people that are so warm, it makes it worthwhile.”

Mendes also said they were missing their dog Lucho, a Doberman, but she loved how dog-friendly Bondi was and it made her happy to see them everywhere.

Mendes is this year’s McHappy Day ambassador and on Friday she met with families staying at Ronald McDonald House in Westmead ahead of McHappy Day on Saturday.

McHappy Day is the largest annual fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities, which help seriously ill and injured children and their families stay together while receiving medical care in a nearby hospital.

Mendes told news.com.au the cause was close to heart because years ago her cousin had to travel across the US to get treatment for her baby with neuroblastoma (who is now in remission at 8 years old).

“She has two kids and travelling with those two kids and her husband was very challenging, as you can imagine, and Ronald McDonald House was there for her in more ways than just providing a house,” she said.

“It provided a community … a support system, so I am really connected to this charity.”

Mendes will be at McDonald’s in Haberfield, NSW on Saturday but all Australians can support the McHappy Day fundraiser by buying a Big Mac ($2 from every Big Mac sold goes directly to RMHC), picking up a pair of $5 Silly Socks or Helping Hands for $2, $10 or $50, and making a donation online by visiting www.rmhc.org.au/give
