BANKRUPT high-flyer Geoffrey Edelsten has put his luxury Gold Coast penthouse on the market in the wake of his split with young wife Brynne.

HIGH-PROFILE former medico Geoffrey Edelsten, whose 2014 year has started with the collapse of his marriage and his filing for bankruptcy in the US, is selling his opulent Main Beach 'palace'.

Mr Edelsten, who with reality TV star wife Brynne has used the Palazzo Versace penthouse as a Gold Coast retreat, is to auction the apartment on Sunday.

He is believed to have outlaid around $3 million for the two-level property, which overlooks the Broadwater, in 2010.

Lucy Cole, of Lucy Cole Prestige, yesterday said that Mr Edelsten felt the penthouse was surplus to his needs.

The Palazzo Versace condo of medico Geoffrey Edelsten is up for auction.

"He's not spending as much time on the Gold Coast as he used to because his business interests are absorbing much of his time," she explained.

Ms Cole said the penthouse was an exceptional property and ­enjoyed the favoured north-facing aspect.

"It includes a large rooftop garden with spa and a barbecue kitchen that includes a wine fridge.

"Mr Edelsten had art pieces that feature on the garden flown in by helicopter."

Mr Cole said the penthouse was being sold with top-shelf Italian furnishings.

"They are a step above the furnishing packages offered to owners when the Palazzo Versace condominiums were built."

The 70-year-old Mr Edelsten, one-time owner of the Sydney Swans AFL team, has led a colourful life has that has included being deregistered as a doctor and spending a year in the sin bin, jail, for recruiting a hitman to beat up a former patient.

Yesterday it was revealed that wife Brynne, a 29-year-old former cocktail hostess who last year hosted reality TV show My Bedazzled Life, had ended her four-year marriage to Mr Edelsten.

The breakup reportedly was because of a dalliance he allegedly had with a woman he met on an online American dating site.

His US financial troubles stem from a fallout with business partners who are fighting him for control of a fashion label, a casino and an executive jet.

He declared himself bankrupt in court in Ohio late last week.

Mr Edelsten in the 1980s made headlines when he opened a series of glitzy medical centres, including one in Southport, that came complete with chandeliers and grand pianos.

His fleet of Rolls-Royces and Lamborghinis bore numbers plates such as SEXY, MACHO and SPUNKY.

Two years ago he was reported to be eyeing Sorrento mansion Bartinon, built by the late Sir Justin Hickey and his wife Barbara.
