Another royal wedding? Truth behind Fergie and Prince Andrew’s relationship

PRINCE Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson’s united front at their daughter Princess Eugenie’s wedding has reignited speculation the pair could remarry.

It’s been 22 years since the boisterous Fergie, Duchess of York, divorced the Duke of York and was cast into the royal wilderness.

However since the birth of Prince Louis to Prince William and Catherine in April, Prince Andrew was bumped down to seventh-in-line to the throne, meaning he no longer needs the permission of his mother the Queen to marry.

The Duchess and Prince Andrew, who live on the same Royal Lodge estate at Windsor and remain great friends, put on a united front at Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank on Friday in Windsor, where older daughter Princess Beatrice was maid of honour.

A clearly elated Fergie hugged wellwishers as she arrived at the wedding and gave a brief yet triumphant fist pump on the steps as she entered St George’s Chapel and took her front row seat next to Prince Andrew.

It was a momentous occasion for the mother-of-the-bride, who was also seated in front of Prince Philip, a man known to have held a grudge against Fergie over her numerous tabloid scandals and the divorce in the mid 1990s.

Loud cheers greeted the Duchess’ arrival at the wedding and former tabloid editor and influential commentator Piers Morgan tweeted, “Fergie! My favourite royal!’’ when she appeared.

The British media reported Fergie’s attendance at the wedding in positive and affectionate terms and she was widely praised on social media.

The family of four looked happy and proud as they fronted the crowds, with Fergie exchanging pleasantries with Prince Philip and Prince Charles as she sat meters from the Queen.

The convivial scenes were in sharp contrast to those at Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May when Fergie arrived alone and sat in the non-royal pews on the other side of the chapel, across from the royal family.

Prior to the wedding, Royal Central editor-in-chief Charlie Proctor had said he wouldn’t bet against the pair getting remarried.

“The whole York family is very close, despite her parents divorcing many years ago, they still share a home and go on holidays together with their daughters,” he said.

“They are probably the world’s most friendly divorced couple and I wouldn’t bet against Andrew and Sarah getting remarried at some point.”

After watching the ceremony, Mr Proctor reiterated his views, and said Prince Andrew would remarry Sarah without his mother’s permission.

“It is a well-established constitutional convention that the first six heirs to the throne must have the Queen’s permission to marry,” he said.

“This will further refuel rumours that Andrew and Sarah might get together again.

“Sarah is getting involved with the royals again, so nothing is out the realms of possibility.”

The Duchess and Prince Andrew’s living arrangements have been subject to speculation in the past as while they live at the Royal Lodge estate together, it is not known which buildings they reside in.

Prince Andrew took out a 75-year lease on Royal Lodge, which is 5km south of Windsor Castle, in 2003.

He later moved in with his daughters the year following.

Fergie moved in four years later.
