Legendary singer Sinead O’Connor’s exact cause of death has been revealed on the anniversary of her tragic passing.

Ms O’Connor was found “unresponsive” at her apartment in southeast London aged 56 in July last year.

Her death was formally registered by her husband John Reynolds on Wednesday in Lambeth, London. Ms O’Connor’s death certificate confirms she died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, the Irish Independent reported.

The Irish music icon was also suffering from a respiratory tract infection at the time she passed away.

The cause of her death was noted as “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection” on the death certificate.

The mother-of-four died just 18 months after her son Shane, 17, took his life in January 2022.

In January a spokesman for Southwark Coroners Court, in London, released a statement confirming the Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s cause of death.

“This is to confirm that Ms O’Connor died of natural causes,” the spokesman said.

“The coroner has therefore ceased their involvement in her death.”

After news broke of O’Connor’s death, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed her death wasn’t being treated as suspicious.

Ms O’Connor’s final post on Twitter included a photo of her and Shane along with the message: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul”.

“We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally.

“I am lost in the bardo without him.”

O’Connor had three other children, Jake, Roisin and Yeshua.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins praised O’Connor’s “extraordinarily beautiful, unique voice”, adding that he hoped “her spirit [may] find the peace she sought in so many different ways.”
